How to Prevent Dry Brittle Nails in Dogs

Are dry, brittle nails a problem for your dog? Not only are they ugly but can be painful too. How can you help strengthen your dog’s nails?

How to Prevent Dry Brittle Nails in Dogs

Omega-3

Adding fish oil or flax seed oil to your dog’s diet can help to resolve dry nails. Omega-3 helps to reduce inflammation in the nail bed and helps to promote healthy nail cells.

Coconut Oil

If your dog is allergic to fish oil, coconut oil can also help promote nail health.  Add a small amount of coconut oil to your dog’s diet or brush liquid coconut oil on your dog’s nails.  This can reduce inflammation, help to strengthen nails, and reduce yeast infections of the paw.

Biotin

Adding biotin can help to promote healthy skin and nails.  The dose will vary by size of dog and the manufacturer’s recommendations. Make sure to double check the dose before giving to your dog.

Food

A diet deficient in vital nutrients and vitamins can lead to brittle nails.  Paying extra for a higher quality food can improve nails and the health of your pup.

Brittle nails can be a sign of a more serious condition.  Always make sure to have an evaluation with your vet to ensure a proper diagnosis.
